Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
